On-site destruction of PFAS from firefighting foams

A mobile unit that destroys forever chemicals from foam stocks and rinse water, instead of shipping and incinerating them.

Sources checked on 24 October 2026

Summary Free

Several technologies can now break PFAS instead of just filtering them: Oxyle (an ETH Zurich spin-off that raised $16M in January 2025) uses a piezoelectric catalyst, Aclarity electrochemical oxidation, 374Water supercritical water oxidation. Regulation (EU) 2025/1988 phases out PFAS in firefighting foams (general ban from 23 October 2030), and PFAS limits have applied to drinking water since 12 January 2026. The idea: a mobile destruction service for airports, fire services, refineries and industrial sites that must empty and rinse their equipment.

The technology

PFAS are first concentrated (foam, rinse water), then their carbon-fluorine bonds are broken by a chemical or electrical process in a transportable unit. The technology choice depends on the liquid to treat.

New sector and target customers

Airports, fire and rescue services, armed forces, refineries and chemical sites, hazardous waste managers.

How it is calculated

Each criterion is rated from 1 to 5, then weighted. Score = sum of weight × (rating − 1) / 4, rounded.

  • Technology maturity (TRL) (weight 25): The closer the technology is to a product (high TRL), the higher the rating.
  • Regulatory tailwind (weight 20): A law or standard that creates demand raises the rating; a long approval process lowers it.
  • Open funding calls (weight 15): Number of open or upcoming calls with a deadline in the next 12 months (the idea's "Funding calls" list).
  • Competitor and investor activity (weight 20): Competitors raising money show that investors believe in the field: the rating is high. Little activity: the rating is low.
  • Market timing (weight 20): A recent signal (first customer, first plant, incident) showing that the market is moving now.
