Superconducting busbars for power-intensive industry
Replace the huge copper or aluminium busbars of electrolysers with superconducting lines that lose almost no energy.

Summary Free
In late November 2024, aluminium maker Trimet and VESC announced a 200,000-amp record in a superconducting line and the launch of a 600 m industrial line in Hamburg, due mid-2027. Losses cut by over 90% and about 8,000 t of CO₂ avoided a year. The superconducting tapes are supplied by Faraday Factory Japan. The idea: an integrator adapting these lines to other very high direct-current industries, such as chlor-alkali, hydrogen electrolysers and large data centers.
The technology
High-temperature superconducting tapes, cooled with liquid nitrogen (about -196 °C), carry current without resistance. A compact line replaces tonnes of metal and reduces heat losses.
New sector and target customers
Aluminium, chlorine and caustic soda producers, future hydrogen electrolysis sites, data centers, electric steelmaking.

How it is calculated
Each criterion is rated from 1 to 5, then weighted. Score = sum of weight × (rating − 1) / 4, rounded.
- Technology maturity (TRL) (weight 25): The closer the technology is to a product (high TRL), the higher the rating.
- Regulatory tailwind (weight 20): A law or standard that creates demand raises the rating; a long approval process lowers it.
- Open funding calls (weight 15): Number of open or upcoming calls with a deadline in the next 12 months (the idea's "Funding calls" list).
- Competitor and investor activity (weight 20): Competitors raising money show that investors believe in the field: the rating is high. Little activity: the rating is low.
- Market timing (weight 20): A recent signal (first customer, first plant, incident) showing that the market is moving now.
